Head Lice Facts

  • Head lice are a nuisance. When untreated, 1 louse can leave 5-10 nits behind. Picking those nits is essential in preventing an epidemic nightmare!!!
  • Lice tend to gravitate to warm areas: around the base of the neck and behind the ears.
  • Lice crawl very quickly but do not fly.
  • Nits that are within ½ inch of the scalp may hatch later.
  • Nits do not comb or brush out easily.
  • Head lice are not a sign of uncleanliness. Head lice love clean hair.

Treatment Info

  • Lice treatments should only be used on persons who have lice.
  • Treatment kills lice but not all of the nits.
  • Lice may not die immediately. Chemical treatments work for 7-10 days after use.
  • You will not get all the nits out in one picking. After treatment pickingĀ  needs to be a daily occurence.
  • For 7-10 days do not use hair dryers, hair conditioners, vinegar rinses and avoid chlorinated swimming pools.
  • Make head lice checks a weekly part of your child’s hygiene routine.
